The first awards of this MM were made during the Korean War although often awards announced in the name of The Queen resulted in a recipient recieving the medal with the head of King George VI

whilst the Gold Albert Medal was reserved for the most exceptional cases

Instituted on 25th March 1916 for rewarding acts of bravery not sufficient to merit the award of the DCM
